Most Interesting Beaches Near Lisbon Plus 228 Cheap Accommodation Deals
Lovely Lisbon is the home of steep tiled streets, delicious egg tart pastries and strong sea breezes. Indeed, multiple beaches are tantalizingly close and locals flock to them to lay in the sun in summer and to gaze at the sea in winter. Below is a list of five of the Portugal’s most interesting beaches.
Costa da Caparica – The beach for everyone
Costa da Caparica is easily accessible for Lisbon’s city dwellers and thus offers something for everyone. There are many dining choices, from family restaurants and small cafes to pubs and gay bars. It is crowded, especially during the summer, but that just adds to the festive atmosphere. The bus stop in Caparica town is only five minutes away from the beach.
Carcavelos – The cool beach
Carvelos has a rich and varied history. It was made famous in the 1700s for it’s strong, sweet white wine, and from the sea strand you can see the the Fort of São Julião da Barra, home to political prisoners of the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, Carcavelos is known for its beach, which is especially popular with teens and twenty-somethings interested in a game of football with their friends. Bars and surfers can be found all over. It is approximately 600 meters south of the Carcavelos train station.
Guincho –The surfer’s beach
Strong waves make surfing sports the main event. Strong winds mean windsurfing and kitesurfing reign in the summer. In the winter, surfers abound and rental shops and surf schools dot the beach. Guincho is 5 km away from the Cascais station by bus.
Praia da Adraga – The nature lover’s beach
The BBC listed Praia da Adraga among the most beautiful beaches in Europe. It is secluded behind looming rock cliffs, with strong breaking waves and large expenses of blue sky. Far from the maddening crowd, with only the occasional fisherman or surfer, it is perfect for couples. It is close to Sintra, 15 Km north of Guincho.
Meco – The nudist beach
Meco is 40 km south of Lisbon, located in Serra da Arrabida Natural park. It is one of Lisbon’s cleanest beaches, with high cliffs and lovely bay views. It became popular in the 1970s as one of the first nudist beaches. This secluded beach still carries that reputation today and has evermore European nudists flocking to it (there are traditional family beach sections as well). Meco Beach is located by a traditional fishing village. It involves a few bus transfers, from Praça de Espanha, to Sesimbra exiting at Santana, and finally riding to Meco village.
